Meet Our Team - Mike Mackenzie

Training & Development Specialist

Young and aspiring submarine captains, future leaders of the country and industry at Cambridge University, and senior managers in commerce have all benefited from Mike's intelligent and inclusive insights into how to do the right thing right.Mike Mackenzie - Training & Development Specialist

Mike spent 20 years in the military, leading, developing and training military and civilian personnel in a wide range of skills focused on allowing them to understand and undertake their roles more effectively.

As Mike would say, "...over the last 20 years, the employment landscape has changed beyond all recognition. Educational experiences vary enormously, the demands of and from one's job are immense and equally varied, and there is no "one size fits all."

The cost of people is generally the largest part of any business's budget, and we have to manage our people differently to how we did 20 years ago. Employees have expectations from employment, and they are now making demands of their employer in a way that the generation ahead would consider unheard of.

Being able to manage relationships successfully, be they up, down, sideways, internal or external is the most effective tool to generate working environments within which each individual, treated individually, can contribute the most to achieving fulfilment of their company's and their own goals.

While "Happy" may seem an unusual word to describe a working environment, a happy working environment, focused on serving the needs of the business, creates the virtuous circle, in which everyone is a winner and from which the bottom line will only grow."

Surfacing in 2002, Mike spent 5 years in industry running two companies and then introducing change and a new strategic vision to a division of a PLC. This recent period consolidated Mike's military training experiences and has allowed him to validate his man management skills and training expertise in real, hands-on, practical working environments.

Mike has an MBA from Henley Management College, is a member of the Chartered Management Institute and is a member of Mensa.

Mike manages his training sessions in a balanced and mature fashion, developed from his own knowledge of how people learn, further based on his own experiences of learning. Mike believes that you have to make training relevant to each individual, and that you have to engage everybody.

"Training has a very explicit set of outcomes," says Mike, "and these is to make sure that everybody has understood why the training is relevant, that the benefits of the training are clear, and that the key messages in the training are presented in a way that everyone can understand and subsequently use. That all of this should be fun is an essential component of training; I can guarantee that you will not see a powerpoint slide at any stage!"

Employing accelerated learning techniques, training sessions are therefore participative, fun and have pace whilst keeping the content highly commercially focused and relevant to the business environment.

"Mike had calm and assured approach to his delivery. He was methodical and kept the group to tight timeframes but I never felt rushed. Overall, an excellent training style that engaged all delegates and resulted in a very productive day."
Stephen Taylor Training Relationship Manager; HBOS

"The day was thoroughly enjoyable and made what could have been a really difficult task seem easy. Mike facilitated the group very well and despite an over enthusiastic audience, kept us on track. We came away with real tangible actions that will ensure we are in the right shape for the challenges that lie ahead in 2009. A great course and I would thoroughly recommend it.".
